Before the French Revolution the society was a part of feudal system which dated back to the middle ages and it was divided into three estates.

The first estate comprised of the clergy or also called the privileged class they were the owners of the church and extracted their share of tax from the peasants.

The second class was known as nobility, nobels on land and they were very affluent. Peasants were forced to render services to the landlords work in their fields and serve in their kitchens.

The third class comprised of the rich and poor. The peasants, daily wage workers, labourers, merchants aritisians, etc. Comprised this group.

They paid all kind of taxes and lived a miserable life.
