It was divided into 3 estates.

The first and second estates were of clergy and noblemen and the third estate had all others (artisans, peasants, merchants etc.)

The first 2 groups consisted of about 10% of population and owned 70% of land. They also enjoyed benefits like exemption from tax paying.

3rd estate did not enjoy any benefit and had to pay taxes like tithe and taille.

Hope it helps

big businessman, merchants, court officials, lawyers, peasants and artisans, Small peasants, landless labourers and servants etc. Peasants were 90% population with very low few owners of land. Only the members of third estate paid taxes.
