The French Society up until the late middle ages was a highly agrarian society with the first two branches of society, the clergy and nobility having a large stake in managing their own private estates.
These Estates were granted to them by the King and they would manage these by having peasants work on the land.
The owners of these estates were the upper classes or the gentry as known as in England.
The middle class in these times consisted of the Skilled folk working in the towns and cities. These included carpenters, merchants, shop keepers, painters etc, who worked the very middle-income of the society. Better than the peasants but lower than the privileged nobility  and upper classes.

These upper classes believed that their right to Estates, Wealth and a privileged lifestyle was a gift from God and that they deserved this.
