On the day of the hunt, the old tiger had wandered into the Maharaja's presence and stood as if in humble supplication to make what he would of the tiger. It was with boundless joy that the Maharaja took careful aim at the beast and tiger fell in a crumpled heap. The Maharaja thought that he had killed the hundredth tiger and fulfilled his vow. He ordered the tiger to be brought to the capital in grand procession and hastened away in his car. It was only after the Maharaja had left that the hunters went to take a closer look at the tiger and saw the tiger looking back at them rolling its eyes in bafflement. The men realized that the tiger had not died because the bullet had missed its mark. It had fainted from the shock of the bullet fired at it. The hunters mulled over the issue and decided not to let the Maharaja know that he had missed its mark. Such information carried to the king's ears might have meant the loss of their jobs. Therefore, one of the hunters took aim from a distance of one foot and shot the tiger. This time the tiger was killed and as commanded by the king, the dead tiger was taken in procession through the town and buried. A tomb was erected over it.
