Because there was no clocks the time was measured by sand timer or ghatikapaatra (a bowl with a minute hole at its base which would float in a large water filled vessel) and also they use to divide the day into two parts when the sunrise to sunset is daytime and from sunset to next sunrise is night time

In present days time is measured with the help of :-
1- Clock
2- Watches
