Answer:

The Yakima river had been referred to as treacherous because it was very ferocious. Many people had drowned there while bathing and swimming. When the narrator expressed his wish to learn swimming in the river, his mother warned him against learning swimming in the Yakima river as many people had drowned there while bathing and swimming.

YMCA pool was safe because it was not unpredictable and treacherous like Yakima River. The water in it was still; it was only three feet deep at the yellow end, and nine feet deep at the deep end. It was a safe place to learn swimming.

Explanation:

The author’s mother used to tell him and his other siblings to stay off the Yakima River. There were several deaths in the Yakima river due to drowning and fearing for her children’s safety, the author’s mother always asked them to keep away from it.

But the YMCA was a swimming pool, with only one or two feet depth on one side and nine feet on the other. Since the depth was not much, the author feels that the YMCA was a safer bet.
