By being able to develop his creative talents, he profited from the Depression while many other suffered. Yip Harburg wrote the song, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" together with Jay Gorney. The song was inspired by the Great Depression. "I didn't want a song to depress people. I wanted to write a song to make people think. It isn't a hand-me-out song of 'give me dime, I am starving, I am bitter' it wasn't that kind of sentimentality" Jay Gorney's answer in an interview
