How we can differentiate between phthalic acid and benzoic acid?

1. If Heating on a porcelain piece gives sooty flame then it's pthalic acid and if it's non sooty then it is oxalic acid…because sooty flames are given by aromatic compound pthalic acid is aromatic compound while oxalic acid is aliphatic.
2.
oxalic acid is oxidized by permanganate the phthalic acids aren't. Measurement of the melting points will also distinguish.
