how we can get to know whether an element is metal or non-metal by it's electronic configuration.

Non-metals have 5, 6 or 7 electrons in their valence shell whereas metals have 1, 2 or 3 electrons.

Answer. An element is a metal if it loses electron. Or has less than 4 electrons in its valence shell. If an atom gains electron then it is an ANION.
