Listen:
First thing is to listen carefully what the question or topic is. Understand the topic really well. It is useless to speak on something irrelevant. And your words wont have any importance.
Information:
Gather all the information you have in back of your mind in order to have solid backup of statistics.
Questions:
Ask questions to yourself. Why are we discussing? what are the benefits of the discussion? Who will be benefited? Where did it start? and others like these. This will help to look into the subject from all the angles.
Perspective:
Think from the other persons perspective. If you put yourself in his place things may be different.
Make a note:
If you have enough time then note down all the points that you are getting at that moment.
