Phenol can be converted into methyl salicylate by following steps of reaction -

(i) React phenol with carbon dioxide ( CO$_{2}$ ) in the presence of NaOH in heat and pressure , salicylic acid is formed .

(ii) React salicylic acid with methanol ( CH$_{3}$OH ) in the presence of H$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ , methyl salicylate is formed .

• " Oil of wintergreen " is another name of methyl salicylate .
