Adipic acid from acetoacetic ester

Explanation:

  • The reaction involve is-

         2CH₃COCH₂COOC₂H₅ + C₂H₅O⁻Na⁺  → 2CH₃COCH⁻(Na⁺)COOC₂H₅

                                                                                       + ICH₂CH₂I

                                                                                               ↓

                                                                      ( CH₃CO-CH(COOC₂H₅)CH₂ )₂

                                                                               +conc. NaOH + H₂O/H⁺

                                                                                                ↓

                                                                  (COOH)CH₂-CH₂-CH₂-CH₂(COOH)

                                                                         + 2CH₃COOH + 2C₂H₅OH

  • Here, 2 molecules of sodium ethyl acetoacetate react with a sodium ethanol to form a sodium salt.
  • This sodium salt then reacts with alkylene diiodide and after this acid hydrolysis is done which gives a normal dicarboxylic acid which is adipic acid as major product.
  • 2 molecules of acetic acid and ethanol is also formed.
