How we make the Lord mahakaal

‘Kaal’ is another name of ‘Yamraj’.

So,

Once there was a sage named Mrikandu rishi. He doesn't have a child and to get a child he and his wife Marudmati started worshipping Shiva. After a long patience Shiva appeared and asked them for a boon.

Mrikandu asked for a child.

Shiva blessed him but gave a choice, either choose a gifted son but with a short life or a child of low intelligence but with a longer life. Mrikandu Rishi said he doesn't need a child with with low intelligence as he was a sage of great intelligence and have high respect in society.

So he chose the former and was blessed with with an child destined to die at the age of 16. This exemplary son is known to world today by name of Markandey Rishi.

In a very short age around 10 he gathered knowledge of all scripture and vedas that a ordinary sage would gather in his lifetime. Later he came to knew about his ‘akal-mrityu ~ early death ’ but refused to accept it as his destiny.

So, he formed a Shivling and started his prayers by reciting one of most famous mantra of Sanatan Dharma,

“ॐ त्र्यम्‍बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्‍धनान् मृत्‍योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् :”

~ We concentrate on our third eye which lies behind the two eyes and this gives us the power to feel you and by this we feel happy, satisfied and peace in life. We know immortality is not possible but some extension can be given to our death by your powers Lord Shiva
When his time came Yamaraj came to receive this mighty devotee of Mahadev and used his power upon him. Here, Mahadev stopped Yamraj and blessed Markandey with a long life.

From then onwards Mahadev is known as Kaal of Kaal, Mahakaal. ☺
