- British established 13 colonies in America.
- Most of these colonies were occupied by people from England who had settled in America to cultivate land , run small work shops and conduct trade.
- The British parliament assumed powers to make laws for the American state but the people of those states did not vote for the parliament.
- The laws passed were always favoured English traders.
- The American colonies therefore raised the slogan 'No taxation without representation'.
