Enclosure is a legal process adopted in England in the 18th century. Under this a number of small landholdings are enclosed to create a large farm. After being enclosed the land was used by the owner and was no longer a common land for communal use.
From 1604 to 1914, more than 5,200 individual Enclosure Acts were put into force which created legal property rights in England.
