As they had to pay high taxes which they were not able to pay and then the Britishers take their land.

"The tea-tribes of Assam are one of the most exploited groups of people in modern-day India. There is a long history of abuse and impoverishment against the tea tribes from as early as the British Raj.

Tribals of modern Orissa, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh were brought in at first as slaves and then as indentured servants to the tea plantations by the British.

They were paid minimal pay, not allowed to mingle with the local villagers, not given basic necessities, and punishments included flogging and rape. Many young girls were also forcibly made to join the flesh trade as part of  the flourishing business around the migrant workforce.
