SUndarbans were formed with the deposition of silt brought down by the Ganga from the Himalayas. Closer to the sea, the river becomes very sluggish. With the speed slowing down, it deposits the silt load brought from the mountains, and this has led to the largest delta in the world.

The Sundarbans lie in the vast delta on the Bay of Bengal. They were formed due to the huge deposit of silt by the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers.
Another belief is that a series of tectonic movements resulted in elevations and depressions in the area. This along with the deposition of alluvial silt brought by the major rivers led to the formation of the Sundarbans.
The Deccan Traps were formed by the lava from the volcanic eruptions. They started forming 66.25 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous period.
