The arras controlled by British can be divided into mainly 2 types
1. Provinces / presidency - These were areas directly under the control of the British . They were under the Viceroy of India
2. Princely States - These were kingdoms ruled by Indian rulers who had accepted the suzeiranitu of the British. In these states normallu a brigish garrision would be stationed , paid for by the Indian ruler.
