Before the advent of printing, the beliefs and data were recorded in the manuscript (books written by hand). Manuscripts were represented on the leaves of the palm tree or on the papers made by hand. In India, the first printing press emerged from Goa with the arrival of the missionaries from Portugal in or around the mid-sixteenth century. Around 50 books were printed in the Kanara and the Konkani language by the year 1674. The press for the English language did not emerge for quite late though the EEIC made successful efforts to import press by the late 17th century.
