It formed between four and seven million years ago through hypogenic speleogenesis. Hydrogen sulfide from hydrocarbons in the nearby Delaware Basin became oxidized to sulfuric acid, and acidified groundwater infiltrated upward into the carbonate rock of the Capitan Formation, thereby forming Lechuguilla Cave.
