Local artists were affected by the imperial art traditions:

• The nawabs began commissioning Europeans for portraits. Many rulers could not afford to support the painters.

• But at the same time rulers like Tipu Sultan encouraged local traditions and walls of his palace at Seringapatam were covered with mural done by local artists.

•Even the puppet rulers like Mir Zafar encouraged local artists to absorb the taste of British and assimilate with local traditions.

•Even the British employed them to produce images of local plants, animals, festivals,monuments etc.
