How were the North and the South in the 1800s religiously different?

Some whites in the South were protestant and almost all whites in the North were protestant. In the South most slaves were becoming Catholics and many whites as well. In the North, Christianity was spreading fairly quickly with churches (chapels) being built in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
