how were the parents and M hamel responsible for the children's neglect of the French language
Answers
Answer :
In the short story 'The Last Lesson' by Alphonse Daudet, the French teacher, M. Hamel, blamed the people of Alsace for not giving due attention to their language and putting off learning till the next day. He blamed them for not being anxious enough to have their children learn French and preferring to put them to work on their farms or at their mills.
He also blamed himself for sending his students to water his plants and taking holidays when he wanted to go fishing.
The following lines from the story supply the answer :
'“Your parents were not anxious enough to have you learn. They preferred to put you to work on a farm or at the mills, so as to have a little more money. And I? I’ve been to blame also. Have I not often sent you to water my flowers instead of learning your lessons? And when I wanted to go fishing, did I not just give you a holiday?”'
