The British disturbed the people of Bastar by a combination of measures. These were displacement of people, increasing the land rent and their unreasonable demands of free labour and goods. The most cruel act was the intention of the colonialists to subjugate the local population and destroy their way of life by taking over their lands. In 1905, the colonial government even proposed the reservation of two-thirds of the forest area and the discontinuation of shifting cultivation, hunting and collection of forest produce, every one of which was a part of the local tribal way of life.
