During the eighteenth century the transformation of urban centers occurred as follows -

  • In the 18th century, the most impact of political and business formation was on the cities. Mughal cities like Delhi, Agra lost their dominance, while other new centers developed Lucknow, Hyderabad, Seringapatam, Poona, Nagpur, Baroda etc.
  • Merchants, administrators, craftsmen and other important people who lived in the towns till now also moved towards these established cities with a sense of work and protection.
  • The transformation of business activities also affected the transformation of urban centers. European companies established their trading centers in 1510 AD in Panaji (Portugal), Machilipatnam (Dutch) in 1635 AD, Madras (English) in 1639 AD and Pondicherry (French) in 1673 AD, where the surrounding areas over time Cities developed in
  • A new trend of change began from the middle of the 18th century, with cities starting to develop near business centers. The developed cities like Surat, Machilipatnam and Dhaka etc. started to decline before business activities became concentrated at other places.
  • After the strengthening of British control after the Battle of Plassey, the East India Company's trade increased, which led to the rapid development of new colonial cities like Madras, Kolkata and Mumbai, as well as the development of new departments and institutions in these cities. As a result, by 1800 AD these cities developed into large cities of India in terms of population.

It is thus clear that in the 18th century, economic activity increased in many places, while political uncertainty in some places led to economic collapse, which led to the conversion of various urban centers.
