phenol can be converted into phenolphthalein by heating with phthalic anhydride and con. H2SO4.

Phenolphthalein : It is used as an indicator in the acid–base titrations. It is a weak acid. For this application, it turns colorless in an acidic solutions and pink in the basic solutions.

The synthesis of phenolphthalein is carried out by condensation of phenol with phthalic anhydride in the presence of zinc chloride.
