The conversion of ethane into nitroethane can be done by first converting ethane into iodoethane which is done by treating ethane with iodine in the presence of iodic acid(HIO3). The obtained iodoethane is then treated with silvernitrite to get nitroethane. C2H5I+ AgNO2→ C2H5NO2+ AgI

{\huge{\bf{\green{\mathfrak{\underline{\underline{Solution}}}}}}}

When iodomethane or methyl iodide is treated with sodium metal in the presence of ether as solvent, ethane is formed.

2CH3I + 2Na ————→ C2H6 (ethane) + 2NaI

In this reaction other products are also formed.

Preparation of Ethene

From what I know, you cannot prepare ethene from iodomethane (methyl iodide) but from ethyl iodide.

When ethyl iodide or iodoethane is treated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide, it produces ethene.

CH3-CH2-I + KOH —————-> CH2=CH2 + KI + H2O

Hope it helps :)
