Reaction

When sodium thiosulphate is added to a solution of hydrochloric acid, an insoluble precipitate of sulphur (S) is formed. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and water (H2O) are also formed, but it is the solid sulphur that has the biggest impact here. ... This is how you can measure the rate of the reaction

ANSWER

When hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium carbonate it produces sodium chloride and carbon dioxide with brisk effervescence. But when hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium sulphite, it forms sodium chloride and sulphur dioxide which gives smell of burning sulphur.
