Benzoic acid is obtain from dry ice as follows:
Treatment of excess dry ice (CO 2 ) with phenylmagnesium bromide gives, after acid hydrolysis, benzoic acid. This reaction takes advantage of the high nucleophilicity of the phenyl portion of the Grignard reagent and the electrophilicity of the carbon atom of CO 2 .
The reaction for this is
C6H5MgBr + Co2(excess)+ether =C6H5COOMgBr + H20/H= C6H5COOH
