In the sonnet "Not Marble, Nor The Gilded Monuments", the poet William Shakespeare compares his work of art against the huge monuments and statues built for big and cruel leaders. He says that his friend's memory in his poetry will outlive all these sculptures. The reason he says that either they will be destroyed in war, or due to corrosive environment of nature. He says that once these statues are destroyed, the kings and powerful leaders that they resembled would also be forgotten over time. But his friend's memories will preserved in his work of poetry as no power can destroy it.

It is a human tendency to be remembered after death. So the princes, rulers and the rich erect monuments, memorials and statues to keep their memory alive in the coming generations. However ,wasteful and unnecessary wars overturn or destroy them. Tumults or turmoils root out the works of masonry and destroy all the huge monuments and statues carved out in precious stones. The ravages of time and evil practices shall diminish all the glories and grandeurs.
