By the process called hydration (adding hydrogen)

Explanation :

There are four steps involves in this conversion :

Step 1 : When ethyne combines directly with the water in the presence of mercury(II) salts to give ethanal as a product.

Step 2 : On oxidation, ethanal oxidised to ethanoic acid by using the oxidizing agent as acid dichromate.

Step 3 : Now ethanoic acid neutralizes with NaOH and evaporate to dryness to heat gently to get anhydrous sodium acetate  as a product.

Step 4 : Then anhydrous sodium acetate heat with soda lime to get the methane  as a product.
