Take excess of methane and then react with bromine either in presence of sunlight or heat which will become favorable conditions for the formation of methyl bromide.
Following wurtz reactions principle, heat methyl bromide with sodium metal in ether solvent which of course gives ethane.
CH4 + Br2—→CH3Br
CH3Br - - - - (Na/EHTER) - - - - >CH3-CH3
