SOLUTION:
i) When ethanol is heated with excess of concentrated sulphuric acid and 170° C( 443 K) it gets dehydrated to form ethene(CH2=CH2) which is an unsaturated hydrocarbon.
CH3CH2OH-----conc.H2SO4;170°C----> CH2 =CH2 + H2O
This reaction is also called the Dehydration of ethanol. Dehydration of alcohol means removal of water molecule from it. In this reaction dehydrating agent is concentrated sulphuric acid which removes water molecule from the ethanol molecule.
ii) When ethanol is heated with alkaline potassium permanganate solution of acidified potassium dichromate solution it gets oxidized to ethanoic acid.
CH3CH2OH +2[O] ---(alkaline KMnO4)/(or acidified K2Cr2O7); heat -----> CH3COOH + H2O.
This reaction is also called oxidation of ethanol.
