See, I will tell you here what I read in an article few days back.
The assumption that birds are closely related to reptiles is not something, which you will conclude from the general Linnaeus system of classification, that we all use and study about , because obviously there birds and reptiles are not even grouped together. They are different classes, and even we can see that they are so much different in physical terms. But what makes us think they are similar? From what I have studied, I feel it's their ancestors.
The reptiles and birds share a similar ancestral. We all know dinosaurs existed, and we know that birds and reptiles have evolved from dinosaurs. Now when you look at a mango jam and a mango juice, they are related, but at the same time not. They are related because they come from the same source, but at the same time they are not, because they are different products! One is a jam and the other is a juice! You see the difference?
We even have some proof that they have same type of skin, they have almost the same circulatory system(both of them have rbc with nuclei) , and well they also have some similar skeletal features! Why? Because they share a same lineage, that makes them similar. But at the same time, they are different, very very different from each other. Birds are endothermic (warm blooded), they have a four chambered heart (that only a crocodile in the whole reptile fraternity has, so we can say they are more similar to crocodile!), they have a reduced tail bone, thay have no teeth, they care for their young ones( which again makes them more similar to mammals!
I hope you got your answer from my not too short of an answer. Comment if you have something to say about this. :)
