Answer:

Retardants will coat the fuel and protect it from the heat even after the water has evaporated. They also inhibit the flaming combustion by chemical action. Foams also coat the fuel and last longer than water. They reduce heat as well as supply of oxygen to the fuel.

Answer:

Water is the most common extinguisher but not the best. Since water is a good conductor of electricity, it may result in electric shocks to the person trying to extinguish fire. In such cases, carbon dioxide gas is used. As CO2 is heavier than oxygen, it forms a blanket around fire, because of which the supply of air is stopped. It also brings down the temperature of the burning substance. In these ways, it plays a significant role in controlling fire.

We know that there are 3 conditions necessary for producing and sustaining combustion.

(1)   Presence of a combustible substance.

(2)   Presence of a supporter of combustion.

(3)   Attainment of ignition or kindling temperature.

Thus, fire can be controlled by removing one or more of these requirements of fire control.
