Reaction of benzene with acetyl chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid such as (anhydrous aluminum chloride ,AlCl3)gives acetophenone.

To convert the benzene to acetophenone , add acetyl chloride .

This reaction must take place in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride .

REACTION :

$Benzene+H_3C-COCl \rightarrow C_6H_5COCH_3+HCl$

Hydrogen chloride gas is also liberated in the reaction.
