Ethylbenzene is prepared by reaction of ethylene and benzene in the presence of a Friedel–Crafts catalyst such as aluminium chloride at about 95°C (Figure 16.3). Figure 16.3. To improve the catalyst efficiency some ethyl chloride is added which produces hydrochloric acid at the reaction temperatures.
