Phenol can be converted into 2,4,6-tribromophenol by following step of reaction -

React Phenol with bromine ( Br_{2} ) in the presence of water ( H_{2}O ) or aqueous condition, 2,4,6-tribromophenol is formed .

  • In aqueous conditions , more Br^{+} is formed and more addition is taking place .
  • 2,4,6-Tribromophenol (TBP) is used as a wood preservative and also as a fungicide.
