Determination of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in capillary blood can be of value in evaluating sick newborns. In this study, ESR determined by Wintrobe's method correlated very well with “micro” ESR determined in Natelson heparinized capillary tubes. Micro ESR requires a small amount of blood which can be obtained easily by heel stick and this test is easy to perform.
