We can determine the presence of protein in the given food items, by the following procedure -
- First of all, we have to grind (or, making paste) the given food sample.
- Then we need to take small amount of ground (or, in paste form) food material in a test tube.
- After that, we have to add 10 (ten) drops of water in that same test tube (the one with added food sample).
- Now, with the help of a dropper we have to add 2 (two) drops of copper sulfate and 10 (ten) drops of caustic soda in that same test tube. After each addition, we have to shake the test tube.
- If a violet colour appears at the final stage, then we can come to a conclusion that the given food material has protein in it.
