Answer:

Scientifically, there are four kinds of silk produced in India based on the silkworm used for silk production.

Mulberry Silk - produced in southern states of India, viz,.Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir which together account for about 92 % of country's total mulberry raw silk production.

Tasar Silk - tropical tasar silk is produced in Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Odisha, besides Maharashtra, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh and temperate tasar silk is produced in Manipur, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir.

Eri Silk - produced mainly in the north-eastern states and Assam. It is also found in Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha.

Muga Silk - is specific to the state of Assam. India has a monopoly in Muga Silk production.

Except the Mulberry Silk, all other types of silks are generally called Vanya Silks or Non - Mulberry Silks as the silkworms producing these silks are semi or non - domesticated.
