Using the HNO2, you can distinguish between ethylamine, diethylamine, and triethylamine.

When you the nitrous acid with the ethylamine, evolution of the nitrogen gas during the reaction make the ethylamine give a brisk effervescence.

On treating the diethylamine with the nitrous acid, it forms an insoluble substance.

When treating the triethylamine with the nitrous acid, trialkyl ammonium nitrite gets produced(soluble in water).
