Formaldehyde is much more toxic than acetaldehyde. The difference seems mainly to be that formaldehyde is bifunctional due to its lack of steric inhibition in comparison to acetaldehyde, which is almost uniformly monofunctional.

Acetaldehyde is Ch3 CHO.
Formaldehyde   is  HCHO  and it is also called Methanol.

To distinguish between them in the laboratory by some tests, we can use an Alkali or base and Iodine.  Acetaldehyde gives out Iodoform CHI3. But formaldehyde does not give any Iodoform.

    CH3 CHO + 4 Na OH + 3 I2 ==> CHI3 + HCOO Na + 3 H2O + 3 Na I

Methanol is a gas at room temperature and it is a toxic gas.

Acetaldehyde is a liquid at room temperature. It is miscible with water and many other compounds.

Both smell differently.
