Metal oxides are always basic in nature. For example, Magnesium Oxide is a metallic oxide. It will be basic because on adding water to it it will become Mg(OH)2 (Magnesium Hydroxide) which is a base!!!!! Non Metallic oxides are always acidic in nature.

Non Metallic oxides are always acidic in nature. For example Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a non metallic oxide. On adding water to this, Carbonic acid  will be formed.
