Extracting metals in the middle of Reactivity series -

* These metals occur in the form of Sulfides  or Carbonates

--------------------

* Extracting a Metal in carbonate form -

Eg :- Zinc carbonate ( ZnCO3 ).

(we know that a metal is easy to obtain when it is in it's metal oxide form.

So we first convert our metal carbonate into metal oxide through a process called calcination .)

--------------------

Calcination :- Heating a metal strongly in absence of oxygen

ZnCO3 ----> ZnO + Co2

--------------------

(now we have the metal oxide ( ZnO ) which can be reduced to metal by using reducing agents.)

ZnO + C ----> Zn + CO

--------------------

Therefore, the pure metal is obtained.

hello there

Question: How will you extract a metal carbonate if the metal is placed in the middle order of the reactivity series?

Explanation:

Activity series of metals:

The metals arranged in a series of their reactivity from highest to lowest .

Middle element of the activity series are as:

For Ex : Zn, Fe, Al ,etc

Now, to Extract a middle order metal (of activity series) from its carbonate form.

For Example: FeCO3 ( Siderite)

Though we can extract Fe from its ore by many methods , but the best way to extract it easily is by converting it into its Oxide(Metal Oxide)which can be done through Calcination.

Calcination: In this process , the concentrated ore is heated in a limited supply of air below its Melting point.

Importance of Calcination:

  • Moisture is removed

  • Volatile impurities is removed; ore becomes porous.

  • Carbonate ore decomposed into respective oxides and lose CO2.

Equation:

FeCO3 -----> FeO(iron 2 oxide) + CO2

Now, the calcined ore is mixed with suitable quantity of coke or charcoal and is heated to a high temperature.

Equation:[carbon-reduction process]

2FeO + C -----> 2Fe + CO2

[ Thus , we can also add some Flux to obtain a pure metal ]

Flux + impurities-----> Slag (solid)

Hope it helps
