Valency of an atom is the number of electrons gained, lost or shared so as to complete the octet of electrons in the valence shell. Thus, one electron is gained to complete its octet and so itsvalency is 1. To find the valency ofSulphur, chlorine and magnesium .. firstly u should know the electronic configuration ..

the number of electrons in the outermost shell of the atom of an element is less than or equal to 4, then the valency of the element is equal to the number of electrons in the outermost shell.
