Chlorine:
atomic number = 17
so it is 2,8,7
now, what is easy for the atom to do- to take one electron or give 7 electrons.
valency of chlorine = 1
Sulphur:
atomic number = 16
so it is 2,8,6
similarly, the valency of sulphur = 2
Magnesium:
atomic number = 12
so it is 2,8,2
similarly, the valency of magnesium is 2
