(i)First we have to know the atomic number of sodium and magnesium.
(ii)The atomic no. of Na=11,Mg=12
(iii)Then from the atomic number ,we can find the electronic configuration of these two elements
(iv)Electronic configuration of Na=2,8,1 and Mg=2,8,2
(v)The defination of valency is the number of electrons gained, lossed or shared from the outermost shell of the atom so as to complete the octate of the atom.
(vi)Since the outermost shell of sodium has 1 electron,it can lose 1 electron from its outermost shell to complete its octate. Therefore, the valency of sodium=1
(vii)Since the outermost shell of magnesium has 2 electrons,it can lose 2 electrons from its outermost shell to complete its octate. Valency of magnesium=2
