we have to prepare 2 - methyl butane -1-ol from an alkene.

step 1 : taking suitable alkene i.e., 2-meyhylbutane-1-ene (see figure to get the structural formula), now treating it with diborane , B2H6.

we get,

6CH3-CH2-(CH3)-CH3 + B2H6 ----> 2(CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH2)3B

step 2 : now 2(CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH2)3B is treated with water and we get 2-methylbutane-1-ol and boric acid as minor product.

i.e., 2(CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH2)3B + 3H2O -----> 3(CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH2-OH) + H3BO3 (boric acid )
