Answer:

A saturated solution is one which has dissolved the maximum amount of a given molecule. The solution prior to anything being added is referred to as the solvent and the substance being added is called the solute.

This means that when any more of the solute is added to the solvent (in any form) it should fall out as precipitate.

There are a few factors that may change the amount of solvent you can add to achieve full saturation

Temperature - in most cases you can dissolve more of a solute when heat is applied to the solvent.

Pressure - under higher pressure the same rule applies

The chemical composition of the solute and solvent used - for instance you can dissolve much more sugar in water than you can salt before saturation is achieved.

To prepare a saturated solution you can use a formula to determine the amount required to achieve this balance, although a much easier way is to add more and more solvent until it no longer dissolves into the solution.
